John Smed, Founding Director
John Smed’s passion for prayer and mission was born out of lessons learned in ministry. After becoming a Christian in the Swiss Alps community of L'Abri, John (and his wife Caron) adopted a rich practice of prayer, open inquiry and deep fellowship set by this community as a model for his future ministry. He started Grace Vancouver Church in 2000 with his wife Caron. From there, Prayer Current was born, which he is now exclusively focusing his attention. They also started Woodgreen Presbyterian Church in Calgary. In between, John served as the Church Planting Coordinator for Mission to North America for seven years in Atlanta. He founded The Grace Network, which seeks to plant churches across Canada.
As the Founding Director of Prayer Current, John is the visionary who charts the course for the team. He is frequently invited to speak and train in prayer throughout North America and internationally. John and Caron have five grown children and five grandchildren. They live in downtown Vancouver and enjoy their cottage by the lake in Kelowna.

Justine Hwang, Communications and Training Coordinator
Justine Hwang has worked in various communications roles in government, private and non-profit sectors before switching streams to serve in ministry. Justine was a founding editor of an evangelistic website for university students with Campus for Christ. During that time she was one of the first participants of John Smed’s prayer training in its earliest conception. Her involvement grew to developing the training into a more transferable curriculum. Justine’s experience leading students in prayer on campus proved useful as she began to teach sessions with John. Eventually she jumped ship to join Prayer Current full time. While John is the visionary who inspires you to get out to ride the Prayer Current, Justine equips you with practical tools and steps to follow through and continue on the journey.
